Spills and stains on your carpet are a common part of our daily lives. There’s hardly any way to avoid them, even if you were exhaustively vigilant of your home’s cleanliness. What is better and far less stressful is simply knowing how to deal with it whenever they happen.

Below, we share some of our knowledge in stain-removal to help ensure your carpets remain fresh and flawless for as long as possible:
Most substances that cause stains don’t require much to remove from carpets made of most materials. These include alcohol, soda, ice cream, milk, berry juice, paint, and pet stains. Our advice is to simply mix a ¼ teaspoon of non-bleach detergent or white vinegar with 32 ounces of water, which you can then spray or blot onto the carpet stain. Then, rinse with warm water, and repeat until the stain is removed.
Unique Water-Soluble Stains
There are a variety of water-soluble stains that have specific ways to respond in order to restore your carpets. These stains occur from heavy liquids such as blood, wine, tea, chocolate, mustard. To provide an example of how to address cleaning all of these, we’ll use another example: coffee. As one of the most popular beverages in both homes and workplaces, carpet stains from coffee spills are the most common to occur. As you should with any carpet stain, first identify the type of carpet you have. This affects the type of cleansing agent you should use to clean the stain.
Wool or wool blend carpeting requires using one tablespoon of mild detergent mixed with one cup of water to properly clean coffee stains. Polypropylene carpets can withstand stronger cleansers, such one tablespoon ammonia with one cup of water, or one-part chlorine with five parts water. Finally, similarly with water-soluble stains, blot or spritz the mixture, rinse with warm water, and repeat. However, to make sure the stain has been completely removed, working together with a professional carpet cleaning company will be your best bet.
While most stains caused by liquid substances require some amount of cleansing agent to remove, harder substances such as fat, wax, glue and gum have specific methods of removal.
- Fats and waxes: place a paper towel over the stained area and placing an electrical iron on top while on its warm setting. The substance will soften or melt, with the paper towel absorbing it from the carpet.
- Glue: Dip a cotton ball or soft cloth in rubbing alcohol and blotting it on a glue stain, then gently wipe away the moistened glue until it is entirely removed.
- Gum: freeze it up using a piece of ice, then shatter it with a spoon or other blunt object. The pieces can then be picked out or vacuumed.
