Spring Cleaning: The 4-Pile System to Reduce Clutter and Organize Your Home

Your home should be a place you can relax, spend time with family and friends, sleep well and feel happy.
Extra clutter around your home can make your environment stressful or unpleasant — but many people say they have so much “stuff” that they don’t know where to begin to pare down.
Here are simple steps to tackling just a little bit each day and making real progress:
- One room at a time. Don’t start on a new room until you feel like the previous room is finished. If you don’t have time to do an entire room at once, break rooms into sections and do just 15 minutes at a time!
- Use the four-pile system: In every room, put things into piles of items to donate, to keep, to put into storage and/or to throw away.
- Once you’ve handled the donation, storage and throw-away piles, work on a system to organize the pile of things to keep. Once everything has a “home” to go to, keeping things organized should be much easier!
- Once you’ve organized the room, treat yourself to some new decorations to make it even more cheerful and welcoming.
